Iron Sky looks delightfully over-the-top. ^_^

Have these been mentioned yet?  I came upon their trailers (which should be found on the linked-to pages), and both look as though they might turn out well - some perhaps slightly hammy delivery of lines from Charlize Theron notwithstanding.

Wrath of the Titans - a rather fun-looking sequel (I think) to the remake of Clash of the Titans, with some enjoyable monster design, including an interesting take on what seems to be the Chimera.  At the least the designs look more interesting than those in Immortals, I feel.

Show White and the Huntsman - the aforementioned Charlize Theron movie, featuring she as the wicked stepmother and the girl from Twilight (if I'm not much mistaken) as Snow White.  I rather like their take on the Magic Mirror, and a more actiony-looking take on the story than usual, which is an interesting direction for it.

My comments, however, are based primarily on those trailers; whether these will turn out to be any good or not remains to be discovered.

Wonder if Wrath of the Titans will be using proper 3D this time. Snow White looks very interesting.  :)

Now that we've had roughly 2 months of movies here's a better idea of what has been popular so far in SA cinema. The end-of-Feb update of top movies for 2012:

1   GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO
2   DOLPHIN TALE (3D)
3   UNDERWORLD AWAKENINGS (3D)
4   JACK & JILL
5   WE BOUGHT A ZOO
6   FOOTLOOSE
7   SAFE HOUSE
8   THE DESCENDANTS
9   DARKEST HOUR (3D)
10   SEEKING JUSTICE

So folks apparently love the idea of Adam Sandler in drag...

Trending-wise I expect to see Hugo and Star Wars ep1 3D enter the list, and for Safe House to move up quite a few spots by end of next month. May even see Iron Lady enter the list.

Yes, us south africans like our movies brain dead!

Personally it is a shame to see how Adam Sandler lost his touch. Jack & Jill is SO BAD. It is sad as I used to be a fan of his quirky/silly comedies.

On a new note...does anyone know when The Artist will hit our shores?

Ugh, if it does, I do hope that a 2D version accompanies it.  While I do think that 3D can be beneficial - I think that it worked well in Avatar, for example - I also think that in most cases 2D is superior: the 3D technology seems to me to add little information that my brain doesn't glean otherwise, and leaves the movie significantly dimmer. :/

hear hear!

also, the latest avengers trailer

The Avengers - Official Trailer #2 (HD)

personally i'm disappointed in the design of the hulk.  i loved the ripped look created in louis leterrier's incredible hulk.  acres of literally rippling muscle with wild unkempt hair is how i always pictured the hulk, seeing as his muscles are practically bursting through his skin.  for avengers they seemed to have gone back to a design more like that in ang lee's hulk and i think that's a step backwards.

people might say it looks more realistic, but hulk doesn't really fit the standard human mould, does he? that's kind of the point of the hulk.  besides, i thought we abandoned realism around the time a giant radioactive monster teamed up with a norse god and a billionaire in a flying metal suit
...so how are things?

Haven't done this for a while, interesting to see how the top movies for 2012 are going so far (in order based on Ster Kinekor box office data up to 10 May):

1 THE AVENGERS (& 3D)
2 THE LORAX (& 3D)
3 JOURNEY 2: THE MYSTERIOUS ISLAND (& 3D)
4 SAFE HOUSE
5 JACK & JILL
6 SEMI SOET
7 HUNGER GAMES
8 THIS MEANS WAR
9 AMERICAN PIE: REUNION
10 MATERIAL

I'm glad to see Jack & Jill dropping down the list, also cool to see local movies continue to be well supported (Semi Soet & Material).

Considering The Avengers was only released on 26 April this movie is absolutely blowing everything else out of the water. After only two weeks of flighting it pulled in more than double the amount of any other movie in this list. Pretty certain that this will remain the number one movie of 2012, and possibly trump Avatar as SA's top movie of all time.

Sounds very promising, thanks Margita  ;D

End of June's box office results don't show too much of a change in the top 10, the Avengers just continues to widen the gap as it approaches R40m (Ster Kinekor ticket sales)

1 THE AVENGERS (& 3D)
2 THE LORAX (& 3D)
3 JOURNEY 2: THE MYSTERIOUS ISLAND (& 3D)
4 MEN IN BLACK 3 (& 3D)
5 SAFE HOUSE
6 JACK & JILL
7 HUNGER GAMES
8 SEMI SOET
9 AMERICAN PIE: REUNION
10 THIS MEANS WAR

The next two entrants into the top 10 are likely to be Madagascar 3 and Leon Schuster's Mad Buddies, as their opening weekends did very well, both making roughly R5m

In an interesting development for the upcoming Wreck-It Ralph animated movie, the movie's titular character is being included as one of the racers in the new Sonic All-Star Racing game.

It's a cool tie-in that will work well to promote both the movie and the game but does feel a bit out of place with a cast otherwise made of classic Sega characters.

Wreck-It Ralph is due to hit SA in November

Also, the new Robocop movie/remake is listed on the Nu Metro website as launching mid-September this year!
