Reboot season continues with a fresh look at the original Man of Steel. Here's an international teaser trailer for the Superman reboot, with voice-over from Russel Crowe (playing Superman's biological father Jor-El):

Can't help but notice that the music is from one of the most famous scenes in the Lord of the Rings trilogy (after Gandalf declares that the Balrog shall not pass)... while it is common for movie trailers to borrow music from other soundtracks or use dedicated music-houses like Two Steps From Hell, this choice is a bit more noticeable than usual.

Since the last results from June this year, the top 10 movies of the year (based on local ticket sales) have shifted quite a bit, though The Avengers continues to hold first place.

Not much of a British Comedy fan but enjoyed the Tangled Animation

That animation's a nice way to finish the Tangled story off... got to wonder though if they're going to do a full-length sequel on top of that. Hopefully not.

Not much change in the SA 2012 top 10 movies list for the first week of August, thankfully Jack & Jill has finally dropped off due to Spiderman entering the list.

It's also surprising to see that Batman didn't get as much of an audience as expected... wonder if folks were staying away from the first week of release due to 'security concerns'

Following recent news that Tom Cruise was working together with film director Tony Scott to create a sequel to the movie Top Gun, it has been reported that Tony Scott (younger brother of director Ridley Scott) apparently committed suicide yesterday by leaping off a bridge in Los Angeles.

His notable movie contributions include: Beverly Hills Cop II, The Last Boy Scout, True Romance, Days of Thunder, Crimson Tide, Enemy of the State, Spy Game, Man on Fire, Domino, The Taking of Pelham 123 and Unstoppable

Starting back in 2008, things finally seem to be back on track for a new Judge Dredd movie with this trailer that was released fairly recently and a UK release date of 7 September:

If the shots have some familiarity to them it is because the movie has been filmed in Cape Town

Looks like the 3D approach is similar to Resident Evil - lots of slow motion explosions and things flying through the air

Does seem to have that feel to it, but maybe that's what Dredd needs to make it more than just another game/comic-license-based-generic action-fest! Local release should be some time towards the end of September.


Something to keep an eye out for in December this year is the release of Adventures in Zambezia by Cape Town studio Triggerfish.

This locally-produced animation will feature a voice cast that includes Samuel L. Jackson, Leonard Nimoy, Abigail Breslin (Zombieland: Little Rock), Jeff Goldblum, Jim Cummings (every animation ever) and Jenifer Lewis (Princess & The Frog: Mama Odie)

According to their blog, the film has already been screened in Israel and Russia.

Zambezia has pretty much been everywhere but here. As far as I know they have an American distributor, so we're low on the delivery list.

Pretty keen to see it myself, it's been well received everywhere if the Triggerfish twitter is anything to go by.
